I am attempting to login to my new vpn server from the internet and recieve the above error. The connection seems to begin, it then reads "registrying this computer on the network" and then I get the error. Q articles seem to point towards multilink settings but I am having difficulty getting past this. Any thoughts? This is setup as a PPTP connection.

I have one ISA on Win2k SP3 server (Non ad integrated). One internal NIC with DHCP on segment. External NIC is connected to the internet. RRAS is running on the same ISA server. Client is WinXP.

I am new to the forum but couldn't get the search function to work. I always check search first because I can usually fine my answer there without bothering anybody.
Thanks.

Hi ferrp,

error 733 means "Your computer and the remote computer could not agree on PPP control protocols." So, there seems to be some conflicting settings between the VPN client and the VPN gateway.

Look into the VPN properties on the client. The multilink settings can be found in the Networking tab -> Settings. On ISA, all the VPN settings can be found in the RRAS mmc. There are two places to look into: properties of the server (this are global settings) and the properties of the individual Remote Access Policies.

HTH,
Stefaan

My multilink settings on my RRAS server are set to "Default for server settings" for the access policy, and the PPP settings have everything checked. Multilink and dynamic bandwidth control, LCP, and software.

On my WinXP pro client, all three are checked as well, LCP, Software compression, and Netotiate Multi-link for single link connections.

Any ideas why I'm getting dropped?

not quite yet. I have checked all the parameters on my XP client but still the same error. It seems that the server and my client can't agree on settings so its disconnecting.

Right click on your RRAS server in RRAS management, under the IP tab change it from auto assign to assign from a static pool, this will fix it!

I'm having exact the same issues with SBS-2003. I also checked all mentioned possible solutions, but nothing works. Did anybody already find an answer to this error? I'm suspecting the DHCP-server. I think somehow RRas thinks there are two DHCP-servers on the system.

Just recently saw this error at a clients site. This page was one of the links that showed up when I searched on the problem. So I thought I'd provide the answer for others that come here.

This usually occurs when you have DHCP as the IP provider. Try setting to manual defined IP and that works fix up the DHCP requester.

See this article on errors;

Hey Guys,

Finally got this working, was having the same problem as you guys and tried all the steps listed.  Look like Rivet has the right idea.  My problem and solution turned out to be very very simple.  My issue was a TCP/IP problem, due to the fact that the RRAS client was requesting an IP address and not getting one.  I configured a static pool, and also manually configured the RRAS server to use my inbound NIC (a wireless card on the server) to obtain gateway and DNS info for clients.  This fixed it immediately.

This error 733 is causing so much grief because it makes things sound much more complicated than they are (at least in my case).  Take another look at your RRAS server settings and look for simple TCP/IP misconfiguration.

Best of luck, hope this helps!  If not, at least you can eliminate one more possible cause.

Cheers.

Hi dbutch,
Great to hear you got it working. I guess one of the problems we face here on the forums is if we haven't experienced "that" problem before... then there's little we can offer in the way of suggestions other than perhaps linking to other peoples articles.. but presumably people have already tried searching for some solutions themselves.
