Hi here is my network setup.i have in a site one domain controller(dc), an isa server 2004 and the exchange 2003.

First, the isa server as you know need to have to nics, the external and the internal one. The external nic points to the dns servers of my isp so it means that it works so far. I created access policies on the isa server allowing smtp and dns to flow without problems but here is the deal. My internal dns server is my dc and it can resolve internal addresses but it fails attempting to resolve external addresses even if it has in the forwarders the dns servers of my isp. So what could be failing on this setup?

As i wrote, the isp dns servers are the forwarders of my domain controller. I tried nslookup on my domain controller with an internet address and it fails showing me the message "dns time out." Should i configure the isa server to route or what? i dont have any idea of what could be happening. I thought that if the domain controller was unable to resolve the names it will pass the control to his forwarder(isp dns servers) and its not working.

Hi Titovv,

1. Do NOT use an external DNS server on the ISA firewall

2. Configure the Internal interface of the ISA firewall to use your internal DNS server

3. Configure your internal DNS server to resolve Internet host names (sounds like you've done that already)

4. Create an access rule allowing the internal DNS access to the DNS protocol outbound
