wpad.dat confusion - 6.May2005 3:50:00 PM

I've got somewhat of a special case whereby I'm not able to use the wpad.dat capabilities as automatically generated by the ISA server. Briefly, I'm using Windows 2003's Network Load balancing with 2 ISA servers. Esentially that gives me the ability to create a virtual IP address that will connect to ISA server A unless its down in which case it connects to ISA server B. To the clients it all looks like the same IP.

If I use the automatically created wpad.dat file generated by each proxy individually, my clients won't get the Virtual IP but will get each ISA server's REAL IP address.

So, here's what I did and here's where I need help. I deduced that I'd need to have my own web server with my own wpad.dat file. Not understanding the format of that file, I copied the wpad.dat file generated by one of the proxy servers and just changed the REAL IP address to the VIRTUAL IP address. I did this by pointing my browser to the webserver/wpad.dat file and saving the source. That file seemed overly complex with lots of lines that I've not idea what they do. However, there was clearly a place to change the REAL IP to my Virtual IP and guess what....it seemed to work great.

Here's the problem, there are situations when web applications switch ports (i.e. go from port 80 to 3265 for instance) that don't work when I use the wpad.dat method of telling clients where their proxy is. If I manually enter the virtual IP in the settings it all works fine. There is something about this wpad.dat file (or something else I can't think of) that fails.

Any ideas? Can anybody post the BARE ESSENTIALS for the wpad.dat file so I can elliminate the possibility that this wpad.dat file I've got isn't causing my problem.

Thanks for any help.

Hi DC,

You need to use ISA 2004 EE for this to work. Create a firewall array name in DNS and create two records, one for each IP address assigned to an array member. Don't use the VIP.

HTH,
Tom
