Hello thomas, I ve just installed the released Isa 2004 Server standard edition. Ihave configured all the rules and make a backup of the cfg file. after that my machine crashed so I setup a new installation. after that I want to restore the cfg file , importing goes fine , but when I want to apply changes I get an error device is not ready. I have no idea what it means. but thats not all ,after that I cannot apply any rule step by step manually ,still same error. I noticed that when I remove isa and install it again I can make the rules step by step. So what is the use of making a backup if you can't restore it, this is very confusing. This is the final version I'm using maybe you can help me. thanks andy

Hi Andy,
Just so that I'm sure what's happening here.
1. You install the ISA firewall software. 2. You make some rules and configure the ISA firewall 3. You make a backup file using the Backup Command in the ISA firewall's management console 4. You uninstall the ISA firewall software 5. You reinstall the ISA firewall software 6. You restore the backup .xml file 7. You click Apply to save the configuration 8. You can't make any more rules
Is that right?
Thanks! Tom

till step 7 you are right , when I want to apply the changes, I cannot apply the changes then I get the error messages , so the changes are not saved because of the error . When you get these error it is not possible to create any rule and apply the rule. The only solutions is to uninstall isa and reinstall and configure all the rules. I found out that you don't get the error when you restore within the same installation. But when for example your machines crashes and you have to reinstall it. the cfg you backuped in the previous installation doesn't work in a new installation. It seems it only works within the same installation. But I think in most real life scenarios you need to restore it when your installtion became corrupted and you want to restore it. In the beta2 I don't have these problem it works exactly the way it has to be. I hope you understand my point now. I think microsoft has a problem here when this is not working in the final. For most company's the importancy of restoring a cfg is high. greetings Andy [ August 04, 2004, 12:20 AM: Message edited by: Andrew27863 ]

Hi Andy,
I see. I'll see if I can replicate this problem. Can you send me your backup file and the information about your internal and external interfaces? I can then see if I get the same thing in my lab.
Thanks! Tom
